Online games offer plenty of opportunities to interact with other players.
Both a news story and a novel are meant to inform us and perhaps move us emotionally. Maybe the novel offers a deeper understanding than a more ephemeral news story but in both cases content is being used to make us learn, think, know and perhaps feel. These activities align with the CCSS Mathematical Practice standards. I’ve seen firsthand, during local county tournaments and summer camps, how this project can raise awareness of sustainability, inspiring students to stand up for a cause. During day-to-day lessons or summer programming, students can learn how to design and build eco-friendly structures within Minecraft. This necessitates consideration of renewable energy sources, efficient water systems, and imaginative green spaces.
Even if we respond well to silly little rewards or birds smashing against castle walls, video games do not operate like life. It’s important to note that the image of video gamers as socially isolated individuals playing in the lonely darkness of their bedrooms is misleading. The most popular games require players to join teams to defeat groups of foes. It is a collaborate endeavor, and if you ever watched a gamer in action, you will be struck by the level of communication between players, who coordinate their efforts by directing others or signaling their moves in short comments. Studies have suggested that this collaboration develops teamwork and leadership skills. “Making a video game that is compelling and effective is difficult,” Green says.

Finally, in all kinds of teaching contexts, learner autonomy is another pillar of success. The more engaged the learner is in their own learning process, the more fruitful the results. For instance, we can use the game When Rivers Were Trails in the classroom to better understand and discuss Indigenous perspectives on history, land, and cultural practices.
